A Night at The National Theatre: The Playboy of the Western World

WIN heads to The National
Last night, members of the Women’s Irish Network were thrilled to attend The Playboy of the Western World at the National Theatre — a standout collaboration with Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, led by artistic director Caitríona McLaughlin.

What a performance

This major revival of John Millington Synge’s lyrical, darkly comic masterpiece brings remarkable energy to the stage. With an exceptional cast including Nicola Coughlan, Éanna Hardwicke, Siobhán McSweeney and Marty Rea, the production follows Christy Mahon, a mysterious young man who arrives in a rural pub claiming to have killed his own father — a confession that unexpectedly captivates the local community.

The evening was an unforgettable celebration of Irish storytelling, talent, and creativity brought to life on one of London’s most iconic stages. We were proud to see such a powerful Irish production taking centre stage and resonating so strongly with our community. Siobhán McSweeney was the standout performer for us. From the leather raincoat to her biting delivery, her Widow O’Neil commanded every scene. We couldn’t take our eyes off her.

A huge thank you to the wonderful team at the National Theatre for generously providing tickets and for hosting us with such warmth. It was a night of real Irish connection and conversation — and a reminder of the magic that happens when the London Irish Women get together!

Le buíochas agus le grá,
The Women’s Irish Network Team
