St. Brigid’s Day Breakfast with Orla Walsh: A Morning of Wellness and Inspiration
On the 30th of January, the Women’s Irish Network (WIN) hosted a sell-out breakfast event at the Bankside Hotel, Southbank, featuring Orla Walsh, a renowned nutritionist and health expert and Audrey Ward, editor and writer at The Sunday Times, as host. The event was designed to celebrate St. Brigid’s Day and inspire Irish women in London to take charge of their health and well-being.
The St. Brigid’s Day Breakfast provided a unique opportunity for WIN members and attendees to gather, network and hear from Orla, whose expert advice on nutrition, health, and food’s broader implications was both insightful and practical. Here’s a recap of the key takeaways from Orla’s talk, which left attendees feeling inspired and empowered to make lasting changes in their daily routines.
Key Takeaways from Orla Walsh's Talk on Nutrition and Wellness
Food as Medicine
One of the central themes of Orla’s talk was the idea of food as medicine. Orla emphasized how food plays a profound role not only as nourishment but also as a tool for healing. Drawing from personal experiences with family health challenges and her work in a hospital setting, she highlighted how food can be used to recover from illness and maintain overall well-being.
The Role of Hormones in Women’s Health Research
Orla also touched on the importance of considering hormones in women’s health research. She explained how hormonal fluctuations often complicate medical studies, making it more difficult to achieve accurate health outcomes for women. Orla advocated for more tailored approaches in health research to improve outcomes for women, particularly in areas such as nutrition and mental health.
A Career Rooted in Purpose
Orla shared her career journey and how her understanding of food evolved over time. Initially, as a swimmer, she viewed food simply as fuel. However, as she moved into a more hands-on career in the hospital setting, she discovered her true calling in helping people through nutrition. Orla’s message about finding purpose and making meaningful change resonated deeply with the audience.
Fixing the Foundations
Orla stressed the importance of “fixing the foundations” when it comes to nutrition. Rather than focusing on temporary fixes, she advocates for building strong nutritional foundations that provide long-term wellness. She encouraged the attendees to approach their health with patience, consistency and mindfulness.
Big Picture Thinking
In addition to nutrition, Orla discussed the importance of big picture thinking. She encouraged women to trust their instincts, step back and assess the broader picture, particularly in today’s noisy world of social media. She highlighted the importance of protecting one’s peace and focusing on what truly matters.
